Vatersay is the most southerly inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides and is linked to Barra by a short but vital causeway across a strait.
In 1908 ten men from from Barra and now uninhabited Mingulay were jailed for rading a farm on the tiny isle.
Desperate for land to till for just a basic subsistence living they occupied the farm and island. They were imprisoned for refusing to leave the island of Vatersay which they had raided, built huts and planted potatoes without permission.
The case caused an outcry across Scotland, and the government eventually bought the island Vatersay to create croft for the people.
