Uig shop in Timsgarry is owned by the local community who rescued the life-line store from potential closure. It is the largest employer in the district; houses the local post office and is the only petrol station for 40 miles. It sells crofters' fresh produce and local crafts and is the UK's most westerly laundrette.
Nearby is the historic Baile na Cille church which overlooks Uig Sands. Thousands of worshippers were common in Uig parish during the great religious revival which swept Lewis in the 1820’s. Now unused villagers hope to retain the building for community use.
The Lewis chessmen layhidden for centuries in a sandbank in Uig bay atArdroil in Uig until they were discovered within astone age chamber by a local herdsman in 1831. The 93 individually handcarved chess pieces are said to be from Norway and made their way to the Hebrides on a Viking longship. Considered a valubale national treasure, a selection will be exhibited in the Western Isles in summer 2011. Meanwhile a huge wooden replica of one of the King's stands guard at Ardroil beach. Their history is explained in the nearby local museum.
