Stornoway Black Pudding

The famous Stornoway Black Pudding is the focus of a high level campaign to the European Union which aims to achieve it special protected status.

Stornoway butchers are striving to gain protected designation under European laws to safeguard the reputation of the Hebridean delicacy which is under attack from unfair competition.

It comes as rival mainland butchers have jumped onto the bandwagon and sell their own products with the Stornoway label.

Some use the term "Stornoway style black pudding" but angry island butchers claim they are misleading consumers and supplying non-genuine products of inferior quality and different flavour.

Traditionally crofting housholds made the Stornoway Black Pudding at home using fresh ingredients. For years island butchers supply Hebridean exiles with the unique taste of the isles.

But recently demand from outwith their traditional customers launched the blood pudding onto a national market with many top chefs and prestigious restaurants devising creative recipes for the savoury dish.

Fake inferior black puddings labelled as being the Stornoway product are being supplied by Lowland butchers in Edinburgh and Glasgow Portobello.

Upmarket retailer Harvey Nicol is understood to sell the copy cat "Stornoway style" product in their Edinburgh store but is reviewing their stocking policy.

Foods like Melton Mowbray pork pies and Champagne are protected under the same European designation being sought for Stornoway.
