Point

The Eye Peninsula is locally known as Point and only a reinforced sea wall stops it from becoming an island. The only road into Point, three miles to the east of Stornoway, lies over a bed of soft rock at the Bràighe.

The Bràighe has a great beach on its Broadbay side with a carpark and toilets off the main road. There is a picnic area by the Melbost access with a regular daytime bus service to/ from Stornoway.

The Aignish Rioters are remembered by a memorial cairn at the access road to St Columba church. In 1888, the military were called in to stop landless crofters from occupying Aignish Farm. Armed with just stones the raiders faced the rifles of the marines and soldiers.

Eleven were captured and jailed in Edinburgh. The conflict arose out of the severe lack of ground for overcrowded villagers to eke a subsistence living. The farm was controlled by just one family unlike the dozens it supported when broken into holdings seven years later.

Tiumpan Head Lighthouse was built in 1900 by David and Charles Stevenson. There are 69 steps to the top of the 21-metre tall tower. Its flashing red and white light can be seen at least 25 miles out at sea.

The lighthouse has been automated since 1985.The attached buildings are privately owned and have been used as kennels in recent years.
